Faja vs Waist Trainer: What's the Difference?

If you're new to shapewear, the names can be confusing. Fajas, waist trainers, bodysuits and compression shorts all smooth and shape, but each one focuses on a different area. Here's a simple breakdown.

What is a faja?

Faja is the Spanish word for girdle. A faja is a full or partial body shaper that covers the tummy, waist and often the hips and thighs. Many have features like a double-layer tummy panel, adjustable straps and hook closures so you can fine-tune the fit. Fajas are best when you want all-over smoothing under fitted dresses, jeans or skirts.

What is a waist trainer?

A waist trainer focuses on the midsection only. It wraps around your waist with firm compression and boning to cinch it in and create an hourglass shape. Because it only covers the middle, it's easy to wear under tops or during a workout.

Which one should I choose?

  • For all-over smoothing under a fitted outfit, choose a faja or shaping bodysuit.
  • For a defined waist under everyday clothes or at the gym, choose a waist trainer.
  • For smoothing the hips and thighs, try high-waist compression shorts.

Getting the fit right

Shapewear should feel firm but never painful. You should be able to breathe, sit and move comfortably. If it pinches, rolls or leaves deep marks, try the next size up. Our size guide has measurements for every style.
